L'album è caratterizzato dall'introduzione di nuove sonorità, che avvicinano gli Iron Maiden al rock progressivo
e, contemporaneamente, li allontanano dalla fan base di metallari più puristi. Somewhere in Time fa largo uso di
chitarre synth, che possono essere viste come un momento intermedio o di passaggio verso i sintetizzatori del successivo
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. A prescindere da considerazioni di mero gusto, il sound elettronico di Somewhere in Time
fa da contraltare, sul piano musicale, ai temi fantascientifici della cover art e di alcuni dei brani. Dal punto di
vista compositivo, l'album è dominato da Adrian Smith (che firma le canzoni più note, incluso il singolo Wasted
Years) e da Steve Harris, che produce alcune delle suite più lunghe e articolate della storia del gruppo (come la
celeberrima Heaven Can Wait, che diventerà uno dei brani più suonati dal vivo, ed Alexander the Great).
